Vishnupathi Punya Kaalam is a spiritual event of great importance.
We have described the significance of Vishnupathi Punya Kaalam
in an article in AUMzine Issue 1.
Please refer to that article to refresh your memory about Vishnupathi.
The matter of interest now is the first Vishnupathi of the Pramaadhi year which
occurs on May/15/99 and lasts from 0200 hours to 1030 hours on that day.
Please refer to pages 25 to 34 of the May/99 issue of Sri Agasthia Vijayam
for details regarding a Vishnu leela (Lord's play) that happened during the
first Pramaadhi Vishnupathi in a previous era.
In this article, we'll focus on the karma nullification speciality of the first Pramaadhi Vishnupathi.
As we have mentioned before, the goal of life is to see God, know God and merge with God.
But to achieve this goal, one's karma baggage must first be neutralized.
The speciality of this particular Vishnupathi is that it provides an opportunity to nullify
the bad karma arising out of the improper use of the ego.
The ego or the pernicious "I" is a huge stumbling block on the road to God.
To battle the pernicious "I", one must surrender oneself completely to the Divine Will.
Meditate on the dictum, "I'm not the doer, God is".
Whatever happens, happens because of the Divine Will.
We must understand this totally if we want to make spiritual progress.
But almost everyone finds it hard to give credit to God!
The world is full of claims like, "I did this, I achieved that," and the like.
If divinities like Sri Garuda and Sri Nandheesvara say that they are not the doers,
do we have any right to claim doership?
Where there's wealth, beauty, education, power or physical strength,
the chances are good that ego will rear its ugly head there.
But we must realize that all these material blessings in this life
are the result of punniyam (good karma) accumulated by the grace of God in previous lives.
So our achievements are not the result of our intelligence, but because of punniyam.
If we understand this, we'll conclude that we're not the doers.
Because of ego-maaya, the delusion caused by the pernicious "I",
we are full of ego-mayam (permeated by ego).
We must surrender this ego-mayam at the lotus feet of Sri Maha Vishnu and become
full of Vishnu-mayam (permeated by Vishnu).
Those who understand that God is the doer
and who offer their actions and the results of their actions to God
in an attitude of perfect surrender to the Divine Will
are not subject to the bad karma caused by the pernicious "I".
The arrogance caused by the pernicious "I" often translates to thoughts, words and actions that harm others.
This in turn leads to bad karma.
It's this bad karma that can be nullified during the first Pramaadhi Vishnupathi.
This Vishnupathi also gives us an opportunity for the nullification of bad karma
accumulated as a result of greed, for example the acquisition of wealth through
improper means like bribes.
During the Vishnupathi hours,
we must repent for the harm caused by our arrogance and beg Sri Maha Vishnu for forgiveness.
If possible, we must offer restitution for those we harmed.
If we do this over many consecutive Vishnupathi spiritual events,
Sri Maha Vishnu's grace will absolve us of the bad karma caused by the pernicious "I".
The merciful Lord Maha Vishnu is ready to offer other blessings during this Vishnupathi.
One of them is the unification of estranged couples.
Another is the nullification of bad karma caused by treachery and back stabbing, both at work and at home.
As stated before, we must offer restitution to those affected and we must earnestly repent for our misdeeds.
Earnest repentance implies that we should not commit the same sin ever again!
Please don't forget that if you miss the first Pramaadhi Vishnupathi on May/15/99,
you'll have to wait 60 years for the same unique set of spiritual circumstances to come together again.
So don't miss it!
Let's stay clear of material pursuits atleast during the Vishnupathi hours.
Let's allocate the Vishnupathi hours totally for worship, selfless service and other spiritual activities.
