Sri Agasthiar Year 2ØØ4 - Siddha Insights

Happy New Year 2ØØ4 to devotees everywhere! The Sathguru, Guru Mangala Gandharva Venkataraman, has shared the year 2ØØ4 Siddha insights with us in the January 2ØØ4 issue (pages 45 - 50) of Sri Agasthia Vijayam, the Ashram monthly magazine. Here's a summary of that article. For further details, please refer to the aforementioned issue.

The Siddhas have provided these insights as a blessing to devotees. Devotees should be grateful to the Siddhas for their grace and use these insights to protect themselves and to conduct their lives in a more spiritual way this year. We bow down respectfully before the Siddhas and we thank them for their grace and compassion towards us.

Numbers, digits, words, syllables, letters - all of these are connected with the Divine. Numbers, digits, the science of numbers and the mathemactics of numbers are the vidyas (science) overseen by Mother Sri Saraswathi and Sri Budha Navagraha Bhagavan. The Siddha insights behind these sciences are many. There's deep spiritual meaning behind every digit and every number, say the Siddhas. This meaning must be kept in mind and much care taken while numbering anything. The number 2ØØ4 has its own spiritual significance and the Siddhas have shared with us their insights on the year that's named for this number.

In the year 2ØØ4, even small words can lead to deep, needless enmity. So one needs to be very careful about what one says. The Siddhas say that hibiscus flowers have the spiritual potency to reduce feelings of enmity. So offer hibiscus flowers in three different colours to Lord Narayana deities that are in the seated posture (Thirunedungalam, Thirubhuvanai, Kanchipuram Pandava Dhoodha Perumal). Offer Peedadhampana vegetables - vegetables that grow while resting on the ground, e.g., pumpkin - to the Lord and distribute the same to the poor. Do this pooja throughout the year and enmity in the office, business and with relatives will go down and cordial relations will prevail. This is an important Siddha pooja procedure for year 2ØØ4.

Humans today have diverged far from dharma. Adharmic activities arising from extreme greed, lust, lack of truthfulness, etc. have reduced many humans to the level of animals. The spiritual result of this is that laws which apply to animals, like group karmic effects, now apply to humans also. This is not a good development but it is the current state of the world. It's because of the effects of group karma that groups of people are subjected to suffering in riots, wars and natural disasters. To lessen these effects, the Siddhas suggest a lot of pooja to deities that are in the open without a roof (e.g., Uppoor Vinayaka, Namakkal Hanuman, Thirumaanoor Perumal, Kondraiadi Vinayaka). Perform abhishekam to these deities and apply butter kaappu coat and pray for the lessening of group karmic effects.

Because of the impact of Rahu Navagraha Bhagavan in 2ØØ4, there will be an increase in Mrityu Dosham. This leads to an increase in deaths due to accidents. To recompense the effects of deaths in groups due to group karmic effects, the Siddhas tell us that we need to increase our worship of deities that are at the boundaries of cities, e.g., Chengalpattu Siddhi Vinayaka, ChaakOttai Uyyavandha Amman, Thirumayam KOttai Bhairava, Tambaram (Chennai) Iraniyamman.

2ØØ4 is a year in which it's easy to develop paadharekha shakti. So this is an ideal year for Girivalam and paadha yatra pilgrimages. If you have to venture for spiritual purposes in this year, whether it be one mile or ten miles or more, do it by walk. This will increase your paadharekha shakti, say the Siddhas. Chant the following mantra while you walk:

sarvam panchaathmakam vidhyaath
pancha brahmaathma thathvadhaha
pancha brahmaathmakeem vidhyaam
yotheethey bhakti bhaavithaha
(or)
gnaanam aridhal
brahmam aridhal
aathmam aridhal
anaiththum aridhalaam.

There is another reason to resort to walking while doing spiritual errands. Recall that siddhas and rishis went everywhere by walk. It's good to walk where they have walked, e.g., girivalam routes, circling shrines in temple precincts, paadha yatra routes. Their blessings will enter you as spiritual energy through your paadha rekha in the soles of your feet. Saneesvara and Angaraka navagraha deities are pleased by this and shower their grace which results in the lessening of the group karmic effects arising from group deaths as in accidents.

Avoid night travel in 2ØØ4. If you must travel at night, do so after performing the following: vastra pooja (cloth offering) for the Saptha Mathas (saptha matrikas or seven Mothers), Sri Kaala Bhairava worship with a garland made of unbroken cashew nuts, silk vastra pooja (silk cloth offering) to Sri Nadana Vinayaka. Even if you travel during night times, make sure you don't travel during night time Rahu kaalam; during these times, rest somewhere and pray ceaselessly and then continue your journey. If you're travelling by bus or train, try not to sleep but rather chant the Gayatri mantra on behalf of all passengers. This is excellent social service.

Chant the Vel Maaral Padhikam of Sri Pamban Swamigal. And just like you keep your driver's license with you all the time when you drive your vehicle, keep the Vel Maaral Chakram (available in the Ashram store) with you all the time during travel. These will act as protective shields for you during journey time.

2ØØ4 is a year when birds won't be fed properly, say the Siddhas. They will be harmed, tortured and killed. The group karmic effect of this is that humans will be beset with throat diseases. To recompense, buy birds that have been caged and release them into the open in gardens, fields or in forests. Perform pooja to 80 year old couples without any consideration of race, religion or nationality. Seat them on a seat made of jackfruit wood, perform paadha pooja, offer a lot of fruits to them and to the poor and get their blessings. This is Siddha advice for all of us.

To spread the importance of the Guru (spiritual teacher), many Guru Mangala Gandharva Guru Mandala Yoga Loka Maharishis will perform girivalam at Arunachala. In this context, the Siddhas advise us to perform a lot of Guru paadha pooja. Those who are yearning for a Sathguru should take a leaf from what Bharata did in the Ramayana. They should keep wooden padhuka sandals on their heads like Bharata did and perform girivalam on Thursdays, Amavasya and Pournami days around the Arunachala hill or around sacred hills near their residences. They should chant the following mantra during their girivalam:

Sri Rama Rama Ramethi Rame Raame Manorame
Sahasranama Thatthulyam Rama nama varaanane
Guru Siva Guru Hari Guru Brahma
Gurave Shaakshaath Parabrahmam
Place the spatika guru paadham (available in the Ashram store) in yellow cloth and keep it with you while you perform girivalam. When you reach home, place the spatika guru paadham and guru padhuka in your home shrine. Treat them as those of the Sathguru who you haven't met yet and apply sandalwood paste, turmeric and kumkumam to them and do pooja to them daily.

Ladies should apply kumkumam made from turmeric on their foreheads. This is important, say the Siddhas. Not doing so has a spiritual impact on their husbands. Sticker kumkumam is not acceptable to the Siddhas. If you have unknowingly used bad kumkumam or sticker kumkumam, 2ØØ4 is a good year to recompense this sin by donating good kumkumam (made out of turmeric) for temple pooja and to poor ladies.

On 2ØØ4 new year's day and on auspicious days of this year, ladies should perform kumkumam pooja (applying kumkumam all over the deity) for Mother Kumkumasoundari in Poovalur, Mother Kumkumasundari in Umayalpuram, Mother Kumkumavalli in Kaveripaakkam and other Mother deities who bestow kumkuma mangalam auspiciousness. This will provide protection against Mrityu dosham afflicting their husbands.

Ego is the biggest problem facing humankind in both spiritual and material realms. Ego arises because of many reasons: wealth, position, power, etc. Ego leads to arrogance which can cause humans to hurt others. But when wealth or position or power is lost, the ones with ego suffer a lot. In 2ØØ4, there's an increased possibility that those with ego may lose their position and power at the office and in politics. Those who want to avert this should repent for their arroagance and worship Sri Aatkondeeswarar in Thiruvaiyaaru and Sri Aatkondeeswara Swami (Sri Narasingeswarar) in Iraniyoor (near Thirupatthoor, Sivaganga district).

In 2ØØ4, those involved in the four wheeler business (cars, vans) may suffer serious losses in sales of these vehicles and in exchanging these vehicles for others. To protect against these losses, offer worship during Chevaai (Angaraka) horai times to Mother deities who have Nandi as their vahana. This should be done throughout the year.

In 2ØØ4, there will be a lot of two wheeler accidents. Those who wish to protect themselves against this should chant the following Siddha mantra before starting the vehicle and before parking it:

vel vel vetrivel
sutri vandhu emmai kaakkum
subramanya vel
Chant this 18 times before starting the vehicle and before parking it. Be respectful towards the vehicle and treat it as an instrument given to you by God for your convenience. As mentioned in the Upanishads, Brahman has become all that we see - sarvam khalvidham Brahma. So Brahman is there in your vehicle too and you should be respectful towards this vehicle Brahman. Try to inculcate this deeply spiritual habit of seeing God even in what are termed inanimate objects. In reality, there are no inanimate objects since the very animate Divine is present in everything in this universe. So treat your vehicle with respect. The same applies to your computer and other instruments also. This is the principle behind Ayudha pooja. But we need to do this vehicle pooja not just on Ayudha pooja day, but on all Tuesdays and Saturdays since Angaraka and Saneeswara are the navagraha lords who oversee vehicles. On these days of the week, apply sandalwood paste and offer flower garlands to (the Brahman in) the vehicle. At least once a month, take the vehicle to a temple and offer pooja like you would do for a brand new vehicle. Have pottu made of punugu, atthar and javvaadhu applied to Lord Kaala Bhairava, get it as prasad and apply the same to the vehicle Brahman. This is very important, say the Siddhas, for it's the vehicle that transports you; so the Siddhas command us to treat it with respect as stated above.

Humans hurt and torture animals in many ways. The result of this is a group karmic effect on all humans. Killing elephants for ivory, making elephants beg for money on the streets, hurting elephants with eletric prods and fences, not feeding them well, injecting hormones into cows, killing deer and tigers for their skins - the list is endless. Human greed is the prime motivator of all these misdeeds and so humans have to pay for this as a group just like the citizens of Lanka had to pay for the sins of Ravana along with him. In 2ØØ4, seek expiation for these sins against animals. Gaja dosham that results as a result of mistreating elephants can impact the wealth and welfare of a nation. To recompense Gaja dosham, offer Gaja pooja in temples and get the blessings of elephants. This has a direct spiritual impact on a country's welfare, say the Siddhas.

2ØØ4 dawns on us accompanied by Gajamaalya shakti. In this year, elephants would yearn to have humans talk to them. Observe how elephants listen to the words of their mahuts (keepers). They would like to hear us speak to them also and we humans should satisfy this yearning of the elephants during 2ØØ4, say the Siddhas.

The fire of lust and improper sexual conduct will rage in 2ØØ4 resulting in karmic retribution. For the welfare of the nation and the world at large, ladies should offer fresh thulasi garlands to Lord Hanuman and Lord Sudarshan at evening sandhya time (dusk) and pray to Them earnestly. Moreover they should visit Hanuman shrines where the deity's form has a bell in His tail and they should gift 12, 21 or 102 bells made of bronze to these shrines and offer fresh thulasi garlands in worship. This pooja is a great community service in 2ØØ4; the effect of this pooja is Lord Hanuman's blessings for character building in the nation and in the world.

In 2ØØ4, salaries may not get paid in time. In some cases, they may not get paid at all. The result is money and loan problems. To protect yourself against these problems, perform Kubera pooja in Lord Thanjapureeswarar's temple in Thanjavur on Fridays and Anusha nakshatra days and perform Pradosha pooja in Sri Kaliyuga Chidambarewarar temple in Mallanampatti near NilakkOttai.

Since Soorya pooja is on the decline, eye diseases will become more prevalent. Offer worship on Surya pooja days at temples where Soorya's rays fall on the Sivalingam (Bhaskara sparsa pooja). On these days, apply ghee kaappu (a coat of ghee made from cow's milk) to the Sivalingam and continue your worship in the mornings. This will make your progeny prosper.

Those who work with computers should see Surya's rays doing Bhaskara sparsa pooja to the Sivalingam. They should make it a point to visit the temples where this occurs and witness it firsthand and offer worship in those shrines. There are those who are well qualified in the computer field but who are unemployed. They should worship at these temples on Soorya pooja days. This will help them shine in their field.

Water is very important for sustaining life. Varuna bhagavan and the water devatas should be propitiated properly. But we don't do that and the resulting group karmic effect is that entire communities suffer from lack of water, impure water and water borne diseases. Selling water, wasting water and using water improperly - all these lead to water related group karmic effects. To recompense, offer buttermilk, payasam and fruit juices during Pradosham times at temples. Also perform tharpanam at Thiruvaadaanai temple or Theerthaandadhaanam temple which is near Aavudaiyaar temple (a temple where Lord Rama performed tharpanam) and gift new beds to the poor. Do this continually.
